Burns

 

 A burn is an injury to tissues which may lead to swelling and blistering.

Causes

  • Excessive heat
  • Excessive cold
  • Chemicals
  • Friction
  • Electricity
  • Radiation

Symptoms
Symptoms vary according to severity of the burns. They include:

  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Scarring
  • White or charred skin
  • Numbness
  • Rarely, shock

Treatment
Treatment for minor burns includes:

  • Immediate removal of the cause of burning
  • Cooling down the burn with help of running tap water
  • Gently removing any stuck on clothes from the affected area
  • Covering the affected area with sterilized gauze

In case of severe burns, immediate medical help is required alongwith hospitalization. First aid may include the same steps as above but with extreme care and gentlness.
