A blister is a rounded swelling or bulge on the skin containing fluid.
Causes
- Friction
- Exposure to intense heat or cold
- Allergic reactions to chemicals or insect bites
- Certain health conditions such as chicken pox
Symptoms
- An elevated area on the skin filled with serum, pus or blood
- Tenderness and pain in the affected area
- Redness around the affected area
Treatment
Most blisters heal on their own. Some things to keep in mind are:
- Do not burst the blister
- Try to keep the affected area clean without applying pressure
- Cover with soft sterilized dressing to protect it from rubbing against things during the day
- Take medical help if the blister gets infected
Prevention
- Wear well fitting and comfortable shoes
- Wear gloves to avoid friction when doing activities causing excessive rubbing
- Keep skin clean and dry
- Avoid strong detergents and chemicals
- Avoid excessively hot or cold temperatures
