Causes

• Bacteria called shigella
• Contaminated food or water
• Contaminated hands

Symptoms

• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Blood or pus in stools
• Fever
• Dehydration

Treatment

• Salt and fluid replacement orally or intravenously
• Antibiotics in case of severe infection

Prevention

• Washing hands with soap after using the toilet
• Washing hands before handling food
• Washing raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly
• Cooking food thoroughly before consumption
