Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

 

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic behavioral developmental disorder usually appearing before 7 years of age.

Causes
The exact cause for ADHD is still not known but few of the possible ones are:

  • Heredity
  • Smoking and consumption of alcohol during pregnancy
  • Exposure to environmental toxins such as lead during early childhood
  • Brain injury

Symptoms

  • Inattention
  • Hyperactivity
  • Impulsiveness
  • Distractibility
  • Forgetfulness
  • Restlessness
  • Disorganization
  • Carelessness
  • Impatience
  • Failure to complete tasks
  • Excessive talking
  • Frequent shifts in conversation without listening to others
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Disregard for consequences
  • Specific learning disabilities

Treatment
There is no cure for ADHD but it can be treated with a combination of:

  • Behavior therapy
