Anthrax

 
 

Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by bacteria called Bacillus anthracis and can sometimes turn fatal.

Causes

  • Handling products from infected animals (cutaneous)
  • Inhaling anthrax spores (inhalation)
  • Consuming infected meat (gastrointestinal)

Symptoms
Cutaneous:

  • Itchy, painless blisters with a black area in the middle

Inhalation:

  • Cold or flu symptoms
  • Breathing difficulty

Gastrointestinal:

  • Nausea
  • Lack of appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Blood in vomit or stool

Treatment

  • Vaccines
  • Antibiotics

Prevention

  • Avoiding contact with infected animals and animal products
  • Avoiding undercooked meat
