Anosmia

 

Anosmia is the temporary or permanent loss of the ability to smell.

Causes

  • Congenital defects
  • Brain injury
  • Nerve damage
  • Brain tumors
  • Allergies or cold
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Blockage in the nose
  • Nasal polyps
  • Smoking
  • Certain diseases
  • Certain medications
  • Certain chemicals or toxins
  • Old age

Symptoms

  • Partial or complete loss of sense of smell
  • Loss of ability to distinguish flavours

Treatment
In case of temporary loss, anosmia may get cured on its own. In some cases one or more of the following may be required to cure it:

  • Correction of underlying cause
  • Medications like antibiotics may be used to clear infections
  • Nasal steroids or nasal sprays
  • Antihistamines to cure allergies
  • Surgery to remove physical blockages in the nose
