Amblyopia

 

Amblyopia, also called “lazy eye”, is a condition of poor vision, usually, in one eye which is anatomically normal.

Causes

  • Misalignment of eyes such as squint or strabismus(cross eyes)
  • Difference in power of both eyes
  • Cataract
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Far sightedness or near sightedness

Symptoms

  • Wandering eyes
  • Eyes not working in union
  • Difficulty in judging depth or space
  • Difficulty in noticing contrast

Treatment
Ambylopia can be cured if detected early. First the cause is found and then treatment is aimed at correcting the cause. It includes:

  • Spectacles to improve eyesight
  • Surgery to remove cataract or other deformities such as misaligned eyes
  • Eye drops to blur the vision of normal eye to encourage use of the affected eye
  • Patching or covering the normal eye to strengthen the use of the weak eye
