Acne

 

Acne is a skin condition that causes inflammation of the oil glands around fine hair on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders.

Causes

  • Oil and dead skin clogging the pores connected to oil glands
  • Bacteria infecting the pores
  • Heredity
  • Hormonal changes especially during puberty and menstruation
  • Excess oil production
  • Certain medication

Symptoms

  • Small, firm bumps with a black centre
  • Small, firm bumps with a white centre
  • Pus-filled, red and tender bumps which may turn yellow
  • Hard lumps under the skin that can be very painful

Treatment

  • Over the counter creams and gels containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid
  • Antibiotics
  • Oral medication
  • Hormonal treatments
  • Phototherapy
  • Laser treatment

Prevention

  • Wash your face twice a day
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Don’t leave make up on for too long
  • Have a balanced diet
  • Avoid stress
  • Avoid spicy and oily foods
