Absence Seizures

 

Absence seizure is also known as petit mal seizure and usually affects young children. It causes a sudden and temporary disturbance of brain function leading to loss of conscious activity for a few seconds.

Causes

  • Brain abnormalities
  • Brain injury
  • Diseases of the kidney or liver
  • Family history

Symptoms

  • Sudden lapse of movement
  • Staring blankly
  • Fumbling hand movements
  • Fluttering eyelids
  • Lip smacking
  • Chewing
  • No memory of seizure

Treatment
Absence seizures are treated by giving medication like valporic acid, ethosuximide, lamotrigine and clonazepam. The kind of medication and its dosage varies from person to person.

Prevention
There is no prevention for absence seizures.
