Promoting a Healthier Workforce for Emerging India
The CII-Apollo Corporate Wellness Awards are awarded every year to recognize those corporate organizations that achieve excellent standards in promoting health among their employees.
The awards establish the wellness status of corporate India through strategic health audits conducted by Apollo’s expert assessment methodology. Such an assessment has a three-pronged benefit:
- For the individual, each employee receives a customized wellness prescription following health evaluation.
- For the corporate, this enables better planning of employee health improvement strategies since healthy employees are not only more productive, they also cost less on insurance, hospitalization and medicare.
- For the nation, a healthier workforce is imperative to realizing our vision of emerging as an economic giant.

Over the years, rapid changes in the disease pattern, and rapid urbanization, have led to an ‘epidemiological transition’ in developing countries like India, where deaths from non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular, cerebrovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes are seeing an unprecedented rise.
Amongst corporate India, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, high work pressure, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption – all modifiable risk factors – are manifesting in chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cancer and cardiac ailments.
The CII-Apollo Life Corporate Wellness Awards are an alliance between the Apollo Hospitals Group and the Confederation of India Industry (CII). Apollo Munich Health Insurance Co. Ltd. Is a key sponsor of the awards.
The awards are the outcome of the vision of Padma Vibhushan Dr Prathap C Reddy, Chairman Apollo Hospitals Group and Chairman CII Healthcare Committee, who says, “We believe that Workplace Wellness can be a corporate strategy to increase productivity and reduce illness related costs – for the employers, the employees and the nation. Post the economic downturn, there is a growing realization that there is a limit to what monetary policy can do, and individuals, organizations and governments alike are re-learning the goodness of savings and cost-cutting methods through preventive health methodologies. The CII-Apollo Corporate Wellness Awards are Apollo’s mantra for health.”
In the first year, over 581 corporates, covering 2,29,000 employees were evaluated from over 32 cities. The jury comprised office bearers of NIN (National Institute of Nutrition), IAOH (Indian Association of Occupational Health), IOA (Indian Olympic Association), NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health), IAS (Indian Association of Sports Medicine) etc. The winners were selected for the following categories:
- Overall Best Corporate Wellness Organization
- Healthiest Workforce Award
- Best Health Promotion Systems Award
This year 2009-2010, it was decided to make the awards more broad-based by including smaller organizations. Accordingly, more than 160 corporates were evaluated online and offline. While employees were assessed for their health risk factors, employers were also assessed for the health facilities they provided to their workforce including medical checks, healthy food, gym membership, health talks etc.
The entire process was a huge success in terms of promoting the concept of better health for Corporate India, with some of the more prominent participants including HSBC, GE Money, Beiersdorf, L & T, Cholamandalam DBS, Tatas, HCL etc.
